Well...who do you believe you are? What kind of a question is that...right? Believe me, it is more than a relevant question in this present state of economic times. It used to be that we were only defined by our families, career choices, social networks, bank accounts and even the lack there of, but not anymore. As the economy continues to affect the quality of life for a vast majority, the differences between us are becoming slimmer...even with the reluctance for some to acknowledge this fact. Living with the status quo is actually not an option...anymore.
Recently, I was sitting in a business meeting in Atlanta, I internally took a time out and posed this question to myself. Not because I was in the middle of being challenged with the information I was receiving. More so, because I was in the middle of a defining moment...would I walk out of this meeting with great information just to do nothing with it or make a commitment to myself to do something new to advance my dreams, goals and vision...as well as those connected to me. The realization that none of the things that defined me in the past are now relevant was somewhat freeing, but overwhelming at the same time.
Well, let me tell you it has been a day-by-day call to action, but I'm up for the challenge. The action of asking yourself "WAIT...what am I thinking?" is quite telling. By answering this one question we allow ourselves to move past where we're at into the unknown possibility of something new and great. Unfortunately, what we think can also keep us from moving ahead, because of the same unknown challenges.
Please note that purposely the question was not 'Who do you think you are?' That question, with the emphasis placed on 'think', was never meant to open possibilities, but rather to hinder them...in my opinion. You must believe in the choices that you make...believing is more powerful than just thinking.
The word believe means 'to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something, although without absolute proof that one is right in doing so'. However, the word think means 'to employ one's mind rationally and objectively in evaluating or dealing with a given situation'. So tell me, which definition opens the possibility for one to reach beyond what is presently known (logic) to expand towards what can possibly be (faith) and which will you choose?
A crucial step for me, as I operate in my new reality, is to frequently examine my current thoughts to ensure they align with what I'm choosing to believe. Here's a short list...
- I'm not a quitter...I'm treading on a new path to something extraordinary!
- I don't know how it all works...I'm still learning and the lessons I've learned are invaluable in making sustainable progress.
- I'm not alone...I see other successful travelers on this path and they are willing to assist me.
- I don't know what's next...But I believe I'm headed in the right direction based on my results.
Ultimately, success leaves clues for us to follow. We must make the choice to do so and it starts internally first, before we ever see any external fruit. So look inside, push past your failures, fears, and doubts to find the truth about what you really believe for your personal outcomes.
I believe that if you 'redefine who you believe you are' and take action to support that belief it's only a matter of time until you fully realize your own new reality.
